Protruding Objects

204.1

General

Protruding objects on circulation paths shall comply with this Chapter - 307.

EXCEPTIONS:

Within areas of sport activity, protruding objects on circulation paths shall not be required to comply with this Chapter - 307.

Within play areas, protruding objects on circulation paths shall not be required to comply with this Chapter - 307 provided that ground level accessible routes provide vertical clearance in compliance with Chapter 38: PlayAreas - 1008.2 - pp. 206-209.

General

301.1

Scope

The provisions of this Chapter - 307, Chapters 2 - 309 - p. 34, 42-46 - 302-306 - pp. 227-236, and 47 - 308 - pp. 237 & 239, shall apply where required by Sections 7-9 - 201-203 - pp. 21-29 and Chapters 1-41 - 204-243 - pp. 30-226 or where referenced by a requirement in this document.

Protruding Objects

307.1

General

Protruding objects shall comply with this Chapter - 307.

307.2

Protrusion Limits

Objects with leading edges more than 27 inches (686mm) and not more than 80 inches (2032mm) above the finish floor or ground shall protrude 4 inches (102mm) maximum horizontally into the circulation path.

EXCEPTION:

Handrails shall be permitted to protrude 4-1/2 inches (114mm) maximum.

307.2

Advisory

Protrusion Limits

When a cane is used and the element is in the detectable range, it gives a person sufficient time to detect the element with the cane before there is body contact.

Elements located on circulation paths, including operable elements, must comply with requirements for protruding objects.

Forexample, awnings and their supporting structures cannot reduce the minimum required vertical clearance.

Similarly, casement windows, when open, cannot encroach more than 4 inches (100 mm) into paths above 27 inches (686mm).

307.3

Post-Mounted Objects

Free-standing objects mounted on posts or pylons shall overhang circulation paths 12 inches (305mm) maximum when located 27 inches (686mm) minimum and 80 inches (2032mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground.

Where a sign or other obstruction is mounted between posts or pylons and the clear distance between the posts or pylons is greater than 12 inches (305mm), the lowest edge of such sign or obstruction shall be 27 inches (686mm) maximum or 80 inches (2032mm) minimum above the finish floor or ground.

EXCEPTION:

The sloping portions of handrails serving stairs and ramps shall not be required to comply with 307.3 - (above).

307.4

Vertical Clearance

Vertical clearance shall be 80 inches (2032mm) high minimum.

Guardrails or other barriers shall be provided where the vertical clearance is less than 80 inches (2032) high.

The leading edge of such guardrail or barrier shall be located 27 inches (686mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground.

EXCEPTION:

Door closers and door stops shall be permitted to be 78 inches (1981mm) minimum above the finish floor or ground.

307.5

Required Clear Width

Protruding objects shall not reduce the clear width required for accessible routes.

HOW TO USE THIS HANDBOOK

This book helps make it easier to find information and navigate freely throughout the ADA/ABA Accessibility Guidelines. It is divided in two parts; the ADA Accessibility Guidelines and the ABA Accessibility Guidelines for Federal applications.

ADA Accessibility Guidelines are located from pages I through 337:

Sections 1 through 9, code numbers 101 through 203, contain an overview of the application and scoping provisions. Chapters 1 through 71, code numbers 204 through 1010, contain both the scoping requirements and the related technical provisions for components of a building or facility. All like subjects have been contained in their own chapter regardless of code number.

ABA Accessibility Guidelines are located from pages 339 through 482:

Sections F1 through F9, code numbers F101 through F203, contain an overview of the application and scoping provisions. Chapters F1 through F41, code numbers F204 through F243, contain specific scoping for components of a building or facility.

In Chapters 1 through 71, the ADA Scoping Requirements are combined with all related technical See the Table of Contents for a listing of code numbers. The Application, Scoping Technical Section code numbers contained in each Section and Chapter have been placed directly to the right of the Section or Chapter name.

For example, Chapter 6 - Parking spaces, contains ADA Scoping Requirements (208) as well as the Technical Sections (501 and 502) that pertain to these requirements.

Whereby, 208 is the scoping requirement and 501, 502 are the technical elements.
